I was hired at Giant Eagle about seven months ago. The only thing they had to convince me to join was a union and the promise of pay raises.

I was 18 but living with my parents and my mother made me accept a job offer because she did not want to drive me to any more interviews. My Dad said that I was arrogant to think that I could make more than minimum wage so he didn't care where I worked. So I accepted the offer by submitting my information and joining the union which they forced me to join. Now the union is expensive and inefficient it costs me $8.93 in dues per week to work 14 hours which is the minimum.

Now I have nothing wrong with unions but it should be voluntary and have reasonable dues such as $5 per full time employee. When I was joining Giant Eagle I did my research and found the local union leader makes 3 times what the average store leader at GE makes. On top of $9 weekly due they made me pay a fee to join which was $50 paid over the first 5 weeks. So at the beginning of my journey at Giant Eagle I was being charged $19 a week plus $20 to work an average of 20 hours.

Now I have had two jobs at Giant Eagle. The first was called Prepared Foods Perishables clerk and the second was Parking Lot Attendant. The more extravagant the names of positions at a company the more uninspiring the jobs. The first job I was hired for a week after I applied.

The thing about applications is that the longer the process usually the better the job (this followed this rule). The first day was a silly four hour training orientation and the second was actually in the kitchen where I was cooking in bulk. For about three months of my career I cooked chickens. I started off doing it poorly and being the victim of rants plus irrelevant deprivation and then I became a master at it.

But in that time I only completed about 25% of the training videos. They did not help me with my customer service at all. I was trained nearing the end of my first job in how to use the cash register by one of the senior ladies. There were two workplace bullies who yelled at me.

These people were pretty much to lazy to do anything except register. Nearing the end I had to pull a shift on a weekend with only one other person for eight hours. This person was the nicest person at work but they hurt their hand before. So they were manning the cash register with one hand and I did all of the cooking.

At this point one of the persons who was a bully was nicer to me seeing that I was working the harder shifts and definitely pulling my weight. About a week later my boss, who is the only manager in the department, has me, her and another team leader have a short meeting where they get me to say I am interested in a position in the Front End. This position was the Parking Lot Attendant position. I like to note that this swap happened less than two weeks after I went on unpaid time off.

This is another bad thing about Giant Eagle that if you have not been there for one year you are not entitled to any type of time off (paid or otherwise). Back to this position, I was later called telling me that I had to take the position and work a late shift the next day less I be fired from Giant Eagle. The reasons they stated are that I was suspended because I had only two of the three gloves you need when using a knife, I had to be told what to do, and my contract would take effect the next day. I will let you be the judge of whether they were fair.

The position of Parking Lot Attendant is that you push carts, sweep, and clean the bathrooms. It is the nastiest and most backbreaking work in the store. They will not let me go into another role because it is so hard to find a replacement. By the way, all of the parking lot attendants are male and we have seven which is a decent sample size.

You may say this is discrimination against women but women you do not want this job let alone to be transferred into this job. Another thing is that I heard in one of my college lectures that workers should reach out and do new things. I thought that I could convince my manager to supplement my 14 hours as a parking lot attendant with cashier work. Even though they have hired 12 new people since I was working the front end they will not give me more hours or different work.

The newest parking lot attendant is being trained for a new market district in Cuyahoga Falls a town that is mostly lower class. This trainee can only push five or six carts while I can push 16 which is more than anyone in the store. I was excited that I might get more hours when employees from this store go to this new market district but why should I care. They did not give me the pay raise they promised.

I will soon be joining a different company so I do not care if they find out who I am. A final word do not work here, do not shop here.

It is not worth the fuel perks or even the average customer service. This is a dorky company that can only retain customers with lame discounts on fuel and drugs.

Reason of review: Lost pay.

Monetary Loss: $300.

Preferred solution: I will find another job..

Giant Eagle Cons: Did not promote from within.

Location: Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio
